At H Tredwin & Son Ltd, we pride ourselves on the range of services we are able provide and the amount of care and personalisation that goes into each and every one.
We ask you to guide us on price range, we're led by your loved ones personality on what we think would individualize the service best and we give you the final say at every turn.
A guide into what we offer ...
Unlike some other funeral directors we do not offer packages as we have found in the past that no two funerals are ever the same even when using a package offer. We enjoy the bespoke and individual quirks that come with every differing farewell but if you are particularly concious of cost and want a guide we recommend you look at our price list.
A Traditional Service
Be that Burial or Cremation.
Our more traditional services often include details such as:
Hire of Hearse and/or Limousines
Vicar or Celebrant leading the service
Music and photo presentations
Service sheets
Online and irl donation collection and distubution
Bearers
Direct Cremation
Direct cremation is getting ever more popular as its a way to keep costs down and take a more contemporary take on your loved ones funeral.
The difference between a more traditional cremation and a direct cremation is that you are chosing to have a more stripped back, no fuss version of a funeral.
You are opting to not have a service where mourners witness the coffin / deceased and celebrate their life. They are simply taken into the crematorium by us and returned to you as ashes for you to celebrate however you would like.
Natural Burial
The perfect option for the more enviromentally concious.
We are very lucky to be within 20 miles of 3 natural burial grounds.
While natural burial nods to the traditional nature of funerals, it certainly has one foot firmly in todays society, creating a funeral service fit for the future in a beautiful enviroment you would look forward to revisiting.
Religious and Non Religious Services
With todays population being split down the middle in terms of religious and non religious people, we do our best to cater to both.
We have a long list of celebrants who can conduct non religious, humanist services as well as good connections to the local churches and therefore the vicars around the area.
Vehicles
At H Tredwin & Son we have our own Jaguar Hearse and Limousine available for use at every funeral we conduct.
However if you would like something a little different we can certainly organise an alternative hearse for you.
Previously we have organised:
Horse drawn hearse
VW campervan hearse
Motorbike hearse
Landrover hearse
Steam roller and trailer
Trike Hearse
Have any other ideas for a hearse? We'd love to help you source whatever hearse you would like.
Interments
While some people like to have the cremated remains of their loved one back with them at home.
Others like the idea of laying their loved ones ashes to rest in a cemetry / graveyard. We can help you with this.
Just as we helped arrange and do the adminsitration for the funeral, we can do the required paperwork and organisation for the interment also.
Chapel of Rest
Everyone in our care is brought back and looked after at our Chapel of Rest in Sampford Arundel (just 2 miles outside Wellington).
Our Chapel of Rest is situated in the old Malt House building where H Tredwin and Son first came to be, back in the late 1800's. Surrounded by rolling fields and farms, it's a very peaceful place to be, even if we do say so ourselves.
Here we are able to host viewings if the family or friends wish to visit their loved one*.
With parking and disabled access for anyone who needs assistance.
We only ask that appointments are made before visiting.
*No viewing is ever arranged without the permission of the next of kin

Why Make a Funeral Plan?
A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance.
A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan.
As our customers often tell us, that can bring peace of mind to you and your family.
A plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant’s fee to perform the service.
The value of the allowance included in your plan may grow over time. There will only be more to pay at the time of the funeral if the third party costs exceed the allowance when you buy your plan, or if the costs increase by more than the growth of your plan.
What we do to limit our
Carbon Footprint
Embalming
We take a natural approach to death, treating everyone in our care and sensitivity. We treat everyone as we would wish to be treated ourselves which is why only embalm people who have asked to be embalmed or need to be.
Not only is embalming a process that we deem unnecassary in most cases, the fluid inserted into the body is toxic and therefore bad for the enviroment.
However we do understand and respect that embalming is prevalent in some religions, cultures and might just be what you want for your loved one, so we are happy to facilitate this.
Solar
In an attempt to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible, we have installed solar panels to the roof of our workshop and Chapel or Rest.
We are very proud to say the energy created from these panels now generates the power needed to sustain our work at this premises, which is where our highest output originally was.
Locality
As a small business ourselves, we do our best to keep things local, supporting other local businesses as much as possible.
Not only does this help our community but it contains out carbon footprint.
We are very lucky to be close to;
Willow farms, famous for their willow caskets
Flower farms and growers for floral tributes
and within 20 miles of 3 natural burial grounds
In every scenario, we make sure everyone is aware of these enviromentally concious alternatives.
What to expect after a funeral ...
What happens after a cremation ...
Interment of Ashes
As we're all aware, after a cremation, the next of kin/family/executor will be left with the decision of what to do with the cremated remains.
Throughout the funeral planning process we do ask what your plans will be for the cremated remains, for example; would you like us to collect them from the crematorium, would you like them delivered back to you etc.
Some may want to decide what to do with them at a later date, while others might like to make a plan for an interment to take place after the funeral. We can help with that!
Just as we organised the funeral, we can arrange an interment to take place in a Cemetry / Graveyard / Garden of Rememberance.
This could take place the day after the cremation or a few days, weeks or months after, completely up to you. You may like them to go in a plot with a close relative or loved one, we can organise that. Just let us know your thoughts and we will reach out to the right people, file the paper work and get your plans in place.
For those who are unsure what to do with the ashes ...
We completely understand there are a lot of decisions thrown at you all at once when arranging a funeral and taking some time to think about what you want to do with the ashes might be what you need rather than organising an interment straight away.
Here are some ideas on what you could do with the ashes:
- Put the ashes into an urn to keep at home. We can help you source an urn that suits you, be that one urn to hold all the ashes or a few small ones for multiple people to have.
- Scatter tubes. Scatter tubes are a great way to mobilise the ashes if you were thinking of taking them somewhere to scatter e.g. the sea, on a hill side, under a tree, wherever. The tubes are designed to make scattering easier while also being easy on the eye incase you are having to hold onto them for a bit before scattering.
- Turn them into jewellery. We work with a company called Ashes into Glass who have a selection of jewellery pieces they can make from cremated remains, so you can keep your loved one with you wherever you go.
We are more than happy to look after ashes for you for a while. However if a decision on what to do with them hasn't been made within a year, we will be back in touch in order to determine how your loved ones ashes will be laid to rest.
Payment
We do not ask for a deposit. We trust the families we work with, just as they trust us to look after their loved one.
We send you your invoice 4 weeks after the funeral has taken place.
However if you wish to have the invoice sooner just ask and we can send it / deliver it to you whenever you would like.
We like to give you a breather after the funeral as we understand it can be a very stressful and emotional time and worrying about money can often add to this.
